18 new contemporary apartments in Sompting have been given the go-ahead (30% of the homes would be affordable)

Plans to create 18 new contemporary apartments, a third of which will be affordable, on a former garage block in Sompting have been given the go-ahead.

Adur District Council's Planning Committee last night approved the proposal from Hamilton Investments to develop a site north of St Peter's Place, which is off Western Road.

The applicant pledged that 30% of the homes would be affordable with the emphasis on affordable rent which will help Adur residents on the Councils housing waiting list.

The new three-storey development would incorporate a number of sustainable measures including green roofs, solar panels and electric charging points as well as a 2.4 metre high acoustic fence to separate it from the nearby industrial park.

The committee agreed to approve the scheme which they felt would enhance the appearance of the area, pending checks with Southern Water over its proximity to the nearby wastewater treatment works.

The committee also requested that the applicant make an £18,000 contribution towards open spaces in the local Sompting area and a £35,000 contribution towards improving local transport and libraries.
